Malaga

Fancy a day down in the capital of the province?  Malaga is an interesting city and has a lot to offer.  It is surprisingly un-touristy: those arriving at the airport tend to head east or west on the Costa del Sol and don't actually take the time to look around. One of the easiest ways to get around is to use the "Magic Bus".  For about 12 euros per person, an open topped bus with take you around the interesting parts of the old city, complete with a commentary in 6 languages using a plug in ear phone.  The tickets are valid 24 hours and you may hop on an off the bus as often as you like.  Our favourite stops are the castle (nice inexpensive restaurant with wonderful views, makes a good break for lunch) and the cathedral. Wandering around the pedestrian zone and the area around the cathedral, there are plenty of interesting shops and cafes to see.  The best department store (perhaps equivalent to UK's John Lewis) is El Corte Ingles. The vast store could keep you busy all day if you are not careful!  Underground parking with a discount.  Across the road (6 lanes of traffic! - so use the "countdown" pedestrian crossings - is the Larius Shopping Centre with a Dunns, Eroski supermarket and many smaller clothes and miscellaneous shops.  Again with underground parking with a discount if a certain amount is spent in the centre.

Not only are there many beautiful old building being restored in Malaga, but they are also looking forward into the future.  One of the most interesting is the new exhibition centre: with its titanium covered tiles outside, futuristic lines and marble tiled plaza with fountains popping out the ground all over the place, it is more interesting than many of the exhibitions it holds!
